Releasing of seeds by a lateral mechanical impact for feeding sesame stems into harvester CIGR Journal
Ishpekov, Stoyan Savov.
The objective of the study was determination the release of seeds, caused by а lateral mechanical impact for feeding sesame stems into harvester in order to define the conditions for reducing losses. An experimental unit for simulating mentioned impact has been created. The percentage of releasing seeds depending on acceleration and the height of application point of the impact on single stem has been determined. It was found that the feeding of sesame stem into harvester can be achieved by a lateral impact with acceleration up to 0.5 m.s-2 and speed up to 1.05 m.s-1, if the application point has height 0.6 m from the soil surface. This impact causes up to 5% release of seeds from hybrid 27 when their moisture is 6.2%. The percentage of the seeds releasing...

Kinematics of the Tined Combine Harvester Reel CIGR Journal
Moses Frank Oduori; University of Nairobi; Thomas Ochuku Mbuya; University of Nairobi; Jun Sakai; Kyushu University; Eiji Inoue; Kyushu University.
Although derivation of the kinematic equations of the combine harvester reel is readily achieved, certain inferences thereof suggest possible improvements in its kinematical design.  A mathematically computed reference value of the reel index (ratio of the product of the reel radius and rotational velocity to the reel advance velocity) is found to be larger than commonly recommended values.  The point, either spatial or temporal, within the cycle of reel motion, at which the tinebar should preferably enter the crop is discussed.  The pick-up performance of the tines is qualitatively analyzed and its possible improvement through redesign of reel tine kinematics is suggested. Keywords: combine harvester reel, reel kinematics, tine trajectory

Current status and overview of farm mechanization in Pakistan – A review CIGR Journal
Rehman, Tanzeel ur; Usman Khan, Muhammad; Tayyab, Muhammad; Waqar Akram, Muhammad; Faheem, Muhammad.
Economic growth in Pakistani agricultural sector lags behind growth in industry and services, creating an ever widening rural-urban income fissure.  Agricultural mechanization plays a strategic role in improving agricultural production and productivity in developing countries. The average farm size in Pakistan is small (2.5 acres) and small and marginal land holdings (less than 2.0 ha) account for 85% of land holdings.  Mechanizing small and non-contiguous group of small farms is against ‘economies of scale’ for individual ownership of farm machinery. It was observed that there was a direct correlation between farm power availability and productivity during the past six decades. Being an agrarian country, mechanization can be called as back bone of...

Structural suitability of 10-year old Pinus caribaea timber with a forest fire history in farm buildings CIGR Journal
ZZIWA, AHAMADA; MUKASA, JOSEPH; KIZITO, SIMON.
Forest fires in Pine and Eucalyptus plantations are common in Uganda especially in the dry periods. In an event of fire gutting a nearly mature plantation, tree farmers usually try to reduce losses by extracting and lumbering the residual trees for use in agricultural buildings. However, there is no empirical data to guide material selection based on strength and structural integrity of the timbers from burnt plantations. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of fires on selected physical and strength properties of timber extracted from a 10-year old stand of Pinus caribaea that had been burnt. Test specimens were prepared and tested for MOE, MOR and compression parallel to the grain using a Testometric AX M500 – 25KN Universal Testing Machine in...

Determination of Drying Kinetics of Periwinkle Meat (Turritella communis) By Application of Some Thin Layer Models CIGR Journal
Ebiyeritei, Egbe Wisdom.
Drying is an important process that increases the shelf life of agricultural products. It is a process whereby the activities of most decay causing microbes are either deactivated or reduced to safe levels. This work determined the drying kinetics of Periwinkle Meaty within the drying temperature range of 50°C through to 100°C using a laboratory convective oven. Drying data was fitted to five thin layer drying models such as artificial neural network (ANN), page, Henderson-pabis, Lewis and a newly developed model (NDM). The various related thin layer drying model constants and coefficients were obtained using non-linear regression statistical methods. The result shows that drying took place almost entirely within the falling rate period. The temperature...

Vehicle Path Planning for Complete Field Coverage Using Genetic Algorithms CIGR Journal
A. E. F Ryerson; Q. Zhang.
In farming operations, one of the fundamental issues facing a farmer is the cost of running the farm. If the equipment the farmer is using can be made more efficient, the cost of farming will be reduced. One way of making agricultural equipment more efficient is to develop automated or autonomous functions for the equipment. One of the fundamental tasks for autonomous equipment is to plan the path for the equipment to travel. This paper reports the research on the feasibility of creating an automated method of path planning for autonomous agricultural equipment. Genetic algorithms were chosen to plan the paths with a primary goal of creating an optimal path guiding the equipment to completely cover a field while avoiding all known obstacles. Two example...

A Potential Composite Material for Possible Applications in Earth Reinforcement CIGR Journal
M. Z. Hossain.
It is evident that the inadequate frictional resistance and meager cohesion of conventional reinforcements in reinforced earth structures such as geogrids, geosynthetics and wire meshes are serious shortcomings that not only impose constraints in structural designs, but also affect the stability of reinforced earth structures. In this regard, the benefits of earth reinforcing materials in improving the interaction resistances are eminent. For the reinforcement to be effective, two conditions need to be satisfied i.e. it must possess enough strength to withstand tension failure and adhesion failure. This paper highlights some experimental results on the performance behavior of thin cementitious composite elements reinforced by wire meshes under shear tests...

Plant height based evapotranspiration model for eucalyptus CIGR Journal
Singh, Santosh Kumar; Verma, C. L.; Sharma, D. K..
Bio-drainage is an environmentally favored cheaper option for managing waterlogged areas and does not involve specialized skills and techniques for design. It may be used for any type of soils and climate without any topographical disturbance where engineering measures may not be economical or practical solution.  It is being recommended for controlling water logging, salinity, intercepting seepage and as an alternative to subsurface drainage for successful crop production. The most common tree recommended for bio-drainage is eucalyptus due to its high ET demand, tolerance to waterlogging, salinity and sodicity. Annual budgeting of ground water extraction is required for designing bio-drainage belt. ET demand of bio-drainage belt is an essential plant...

Path Planning Algorithms for Agricultural Machines CIGR Journal
T. Oksanen; A. Visala.
If the field plot shape is not rectangular and if it contains obstacles, the coverage path planning problem is hard to solve for a non-omnidirectional machine. Scientists have developed several algorithms to solve this coverage path planning problem, but all of them have pros and cons. If the machines were omnidirectional and turning times were decreased to insignificant, the problem would be quite easy to solve using known robotic path planning methods. Traditional agricultural machines, like tractors, tractor-trailer combinations, self-propelled harvesters and other man-driven machines are slow to turn at headlands. This is the most differentiating property of the problem formulation compared to traditional robotic coverage path planning, which has dealt...

Thermal modelling and performance assessment of a circular greenhouse with solar chimney assisted ventilation and fog Cooling CIGR Journal
Misra, Debajit; Ghosh, Sudip.
This paper presents a conceptualized model of a solar chimney-assisted naturally ventilated circular greenhouse applicable for hot and arid regions. Instead of conventional rectangular shape, a circular shape is chosen which makes the greenhouse independent of wind direction and orientation with regards to the wind-induced ventilation. Pressurised fogging system is considered as the mode of distributed evaporative cooling. A circular twin-wall solar chimney is centrally mounted which is suitably sized to provide buoyancy-induced natural ventilation. The solar induced ventilation is sufficient, giving 0.6-0.75 air change per minute (ACM). The analysis revealed that during the peak ambient temperatures, the greenhouse inside temperature could be lowered by 4...

Simulation of Agricultural Logistic Processes with k-Nearest Neighbors Algorithm CIGR Journal
Bernhardt, Heinz.
The topic logistic has become more and more important in German agriculture during the last years. This is caused by a growth of enterprises and machines but also be the enormous extension of the cultivation of renewable resources for the production of energy. To manage these logistical tasks in agriculture in Germany at the moment different transport systems are preferred. The classical system with tractor and agricultural trailer, transport via truck like it is typical for the commercial transport of goods and the transport with specialized vehicles which can be classified between both systems. To evaluate these transport processes it is decisive for the farmers to know the key parameters of the single systems like the average fuel consumption (energy)...

Evaluation of FEM modelling for stress propagation under pressure wheel of corn planter CIGR Journal
Khodaei, M.; Fattahi, S. H. Fattahi; Navid, H..
Seeds need a certain range of pressure in the soil bed to germinate and grow ideally. Usually pressure from machinery wheels applies more pressure and prevents seed ideal germination. A finite element model (FEM) was developed to investigate stress propagation in the soil. The pressure wheel of corn planter with 4 km/h speed was chosen to analyze the stress in a sandy-loamy soil. A real corn planter tire was modeled with its mechanical characteristics and imported into ABAQUS/Explicit environment. Frictional contact (based on Mohr-coulomb theory) was used for the soil-tire interaction. The soil was considered as an elastic-perfectly plastic material. Drucker-Prager model was used for soil behavior in plastic region. To evaluate the stress under pressure...
